Motor vehicle accidents are an unfortunate occurrence that happens every day. Transport Canada statistics indicate that in 2010 there were approximately 123,000 motor vehicle collisions that resulted in personal injuries. That is an approximate 336 accidents resulting in personal injury per day across Canada in 2010 alone. This number could be higher if accidents were left unreported as well. When you look at these numbers, you may start to think of what you would do if you were one of the people involved in one of these collisions.

In the Case of an Accident

In the unfortunate event of a motor vehicle accident, there are a few things you need to know. First off, if you sustain injuries that limit your ability to move, or get out of your vehicle on your own, stay put. Try to remain calm, and if you can, call for emergency assistance. If you are able to leave your vehicle, you should stay a safe distance away from traffic flow while you obtain the information you will need. It is always recommended to carry a pen or pencil and note paper in the storage area of your vehicle. Take down the information you will need to relay to your insurance agent as well as to the police. This information includes
  • Time, date and location of incident
  • Name, address, phone number of other drivers involved, as well as any witnesses
  • Driver's licence and insurance information, including policy number, agent name, and company for all drivers involved in the accident regardless of assumed fault
  • Description of damages to the vehicles involved. Take pictures of the accident scene, particularly the damages to all the vehicles involved. If the scene is attended by the police, they will document the accident, but it is still advisable to have pictures for your own records and recollection
  • Licence plate numbers and description of all vehicles involved such as make, model, colour and VIN if possible
  • Your description of what took place, or how the accident occurred, and if possible you may be able to get witness statements
  • If the scene was attended by police officers, get their names and badge numbers as well. You may be able to also obtain an incident number while on the scene, but if not, you can obtain one later with all of the other information you will get
Reporting and Filing a Claim

In many cases of motor vehicle collisions the police are not required to attend to the scene. If you are able to remove your vehicle from the scene, and there are no immediately obvious injuries, you may be advised to attend the police station yourself to file a report. This is where all of the information you obtained will come in handy. Once you have reported your incident to the police, it is time to file an insurance claim. There are time limits to do all of this so attend to these things immediately. This can be a stressful process if you have never been involved in an accident before. Leave all the details to the expert services of a personal injury and motor vehicle accident lawyer. These trusted professionals will work for you to ease your burden and get the results you deserve.
